Fleas and heartworm preventitive
Q: I'm looking for something to give my indoor only cat for flea and heartworm prevention that won't expose my children to harmful chemicals. what do you suggest?
A: I dont feel indoor cats need heartworm prevention in my view. and your best bet for flea protection if you dont want your kids exposed to any insecticides is program which dont affect environment around pet. 1800petmeds carries this

Sarcoptic mange
Q: Ok this is a long story...we adopted a puppy from a shelter in jan of 2003 shortly after that we noticed hair loss and scratching with red skin took him to vet and had him srcaped they said they didnt see mites but it looked like mange so we dipped and treated him. months later our other dog got real bad with hair loss and scratching and the body smell was atrocious. took her in and they said allergies from fleas so we traeted her. she got worse so we took her back and she was on her death bed we were going to put her to sleep but i said test her again so they did and found the mange mites so we treated her and our other dog both with the dip 2 times as they recommended and cleaned and disenfected the whole house. the dogs got better. later we got a new dog so now we have 3. well 2 of the dogs got into a bad fight and hurt each other pretty bad since then we have had to keep them seperated. at the vet office we asked about the mange again since we noticed that smell again and around the eyes of one of the dogs was balding. they said the mange probably never left from around the eys soooo here we go again but now we have 3 dogs who are all losing their hair and scratching and smell real bad. we took the worst of the 3 to the vet for treatment and they did the heartworm testing and shot and treated with a topical and a injection for the mange..well now we have to take in the other 2 and get the same thing done. they said they are using revolution on the dogs. anyway my question is what is the best treatment for all 3 of them? should we tell the vet to shave and dip them? or do the topical and injection for 3 weeks? cost isnt really a factor. i just want to get rid of this once and for all. also how would you suggest we "clean up" the house and yard? the vet said to have a exterminator come and spray inside and out. i have 5 kids and worry about that. is there anything we can do to clean it up ourselves that will be effective yet not harmful to our family? thank you so much for reading my story. any advice will be greatly appreciated. sincerely sick of not being able to love and touch my pets:(
A: I would see vet dermatologist in your area for best long term solutions. most cases of sarcoptic scabies you dont need to treat house except for maybe flea bomb or spray. as for dogs, ivermectin is best treatment(if diagnosis is correct) once weekly in all breeds except collies, shelties and related herding breeds. i suspect however other issues such as allergies, secondary bacteria/yeast infections, etc that dermatologist can sort through

Licking
Q: I have a two and half year old shih-izu. she licks herself all the time. we have tried medicated shampoos and creams. but nothing seems to work. do you have any suggestions on what to do? she doen't have fleas. she is an inside dog.
A: Likely has allergies either inhalent or food allergies. could try a natural hypoallergenic diet like california natural by natura, a lamb and rice based food. antihistamines sometimes help like benadryl at a dose of 1 mg per pound of body weight twice daily. also could ask about allergy testing at your vet
