Scratching and bitingQ: I have a 6yr old yellow lab that is scratching and biting himself that is causing rashes and hotspots. is there a spray or medicine that we can give him. thank you A: Also known as acute moist dermatitis, hot spots are usually a disease of dogs with long hair or those with dense undercoats. it is often caused by a local allergic reaction to a specific antigen. insect bites, especially from fleas, are often found to be the cause.|the first step in treating hot spots is clipping the hair over and surrounding the lesion. this allows air to get into the inflamed tissue and makes it easier to treat. the surface of the lesion is then cleaned with a non-irritating solution such as dilute nolvasan solution. to help the lesion heal desiccating powders such as burows solution (domeboro powder and water) are often then applied.
Flea, tick & mosquitosQ: I've used frontline plus for our springer spaniel for more than 5 years and i know that it works and she's not allergic in any way. now with the west nile virus going around, i really hate to try something new that repels mosquitos too. i live in south dakota where a lot of the virus is hit hard in humans, but i don't like to take chances. my dog is mostly an indoor dog, but she likes to be outside whenever we're out and of course when she goes potty. is there anything i could use with the frontline just for these occasions when we're outside to repell mosquitos off of our dog? or do i need to go to the advantix line. i'm a little nervous using a different brand on and older dog...especially when i know what the frontline does and i know it has no effects on her. A: You can continue with the frontline and put on a flea and tick collar when you go outdoors.

MangeQ: I have an 8 month old collie that has become afflicted with something i now believe to be mange. we had a stray puppy that we began feeding and has since disappeared that i believe brought whatever my collie now has to our home. her hair has begun falling out and skin irritated severely. i have treated her with frontline drops and for a short time seemed to be getting better. she scratches all of the time and breaks open the scabs. i bath her 3 times a week and have been putting anti-biotic ointment on her daily. now it seems worse than before. what else can i do? i have been reading that perhaps reveloution for dogs is suppose to terminate the mites that cause mange. please give me some advice. thanks A: You need vet visit and exam/skin scrape for accurate diagnosis. many things can look like mange including various skin allergies and bacterial infections. cant make recommendations on general description of itch in this young of a dog

Mixing of meds reactionsQ: My pom is 6lbs and is 11yrs old. he has been diagnosed with heart problems and will be on 2 different meds the rest of his life. he is also on antibiotics for dental problems which hopefully will be taken care of next week. my question is that i want to bathe him with a shampoo that has growth inhibators to break the flea cycle...will it be ok to do so with the meds he's on? thank you A: Use any flea shampoo that is pyethrin based. adams makes nice line
What product should i use?Q: I have a chihuahua, approx. 4 lb. i have used advantage in the past but it is no longer working to keep the fleas at bay. i switched to frontline at the recommendation of my local pet store. it helped but again did not keep her flea-free. what product should i use? i live in florida and there is a large flea population in my neighborhood...lots of dogs and cats. A: I live in florida too and i find the frontline plus (not the topspot which is available in pet stores) is quite effective. you will need to combine this with treatments of both the indoor and outdoor environments.
